Small Business Success: Tell Your Story For Fun and Profit

I know what you’re thinking: “Cheap, Heather – Very cheap! Insert the video of the cute little kid, and of course I’m going to be receptive to everything you say!”

Yep. So, now that I’ve softened you up, let me tell you about this great offer . . .

Kidding . . . kidding!

And, believe it or not, the video can help you achieve your small business success. Even though little Natalie is an incredible talent, I didn’t post the video because of her voice. What I want you to notice is the nearly full minute before Natalie walks onto to stage and offers her sweet greeting to the panel of judges. What does Natalie do? What does she like? How does her mother feel about having such a determined mini-diva in her home?

If you watch any of the reality talent shows, you’re going to see the same pattern – before the focus talent sets foot on the planks of the stage, you feel like you know them. Would Susan Boyle have blown you quite that far away if you hadn’t already known that she’d never even been on a date? Would Kevin Skinner’s audition on America’s Got Talent have moved so many people to tears if he hadn’t first explained that he was a chicken catcher by profession – and if Sharon Osborne hadn’t laughed openly at his down-home accent?

Why do the producers waste so much air-time on these backstories? It’s a talent show — wouldn’t the shows do better if they focused on the actual performances?

The shows are doing very well, actually. Why? Because the producers are no dummies. The talent matters, but it’s the stories that move people.

All this to say, as a high-integrity healer, practitioner, or heart-based entrepreneur, you don’t have to try to create an imitation of a slick corporate image in order to reach your clients and potential clients. You are delivering yourself: your talents, you ability, your caring, your very heart to your clients, and their introduction to all of that is your story. That’s what will take you to small business success.

How can telling your story build your business?

• People automatically tune into stories – the human element – when they would disconnect from lists of facts and sales pitches.

• Clients – the right clients – will hear you, and know you have what they need to find their success.

• By telling your own story, you offer a tacit invitation to your client to tell hers. This is critical! You aren’t selling one-size-fits all here – you’re selling intuitive, responsive coaching and healing. To be responsive, you have to understand your client’s needs at the most fundamental level.

Your story may not move everyone, but it’s not supposed to. Your story is your song, and when you hear a client humming along or opening her mouth to sing along, you’ll know. Together, you’ll combine your voices to create music that neither of you could on your own. And that’s the kind of harmony that will lead you both toward your ultimate success.
