Small Business Success: Your Joyful Success Comes From Being and Sharing Who You Are

I admit – I’ve been criticized for telling my story so openly. A few people have suggested that if I want to look like someone who can lead people to small business success, I shouldn’t mention my struggles or the obstacles in my path to success. But for every obstacle, there’s a story of how I overcame it. And for every person who questions my decision to tell my story (my whole story, and nothing but my story!), there are ten who identify with it, and who want to learn more about how to follow the same path to small business success.
You have a unique experience; a beautiful story to tell about who you are and how you came to be in your heart-based business. This experience is one of the gifts you’ve been given to equip you to reach others. When you do what you were born to do, your very core seems to glow with quiet joy: “Yes. Now I’m doing that which I was born to do.”
And as with every other aspect of self-actualization, the more you do what you were born to do, the more you draw success into your life. Here’s what you need to know as you connect with your clients by sharing your story:
• While your story will promote your success, don’t use it to promote “wonderful you.” Your story is more moving and inspiring if you’re honest about your struggles and shortcomings that you’ve overcome.
• Be sensitive to your audience. This doesn’t mean stepping in to the corporate mentality of “strategizing” (which translates to manipulating in this case). But some parts of your story will resonate differently with different people. Be aware of who you’re dealing with, and stay aware of their reactions as you speak. If they seem to connect with something you’re saying, don’t press forward until you’ve explored the connection.
• Balance humor, compassion and authenticity. Allow your unique personality to shine through.
When your prospective client walks away from meeting with you, she probably won’t remember any statistics you quoted. She may not even be able to recite the specific, valuable tips you gave her to further her small business success. But she will remember your story, and how she felt as she heard your story. That feeling of connection will draw her back to you – her sister in overcoming obstacles – and allow the two of you to partner in building a success-relationship.
